นิวยอร์กไทม์เผยงานวิจัยใหม่ อีก 30 ปี กรุงเทพจมเยอะกว่าที่คิด
สำนักข่าวนิวยอร์กไทม์รายงานผลวิจัยใหม่ โดยเผยว่าในอีก 30 ปีข้างหน้า บริเวณที่ประชากร 10% ของประเทศไทยอาศัยกำลังจะถูกท่วมมิด จากที่เดิมเข้าใจกันว่าจะกระทบเพียง 1% เท่านั้น
งานวิจัยนี้เพิ่งมีการเผยแพร่เมื่อวันอังคารที่ 29 ตุลาคม 2562 ที่ผ่านมา เป็นการปรับปรุงสูตรคำนวนอัตราที่น้ำทะเลเพิ่มความสูงขึ้นเสียใหม่โดยประมวลข้อมูลจากการอ่านแผนที่ทางอากาศ
สก๊อตต์ เอ คัลป์ นักวิจัยบอกว่าแต่ก่อนเราคำนวนระดับน้ำทะเลโดยอาศัยข้อมูลจากดาวเทียมซึ่งบอกระดับความสูงของพื้นดินที่แท้จริงไม่ได้เพราะมีตึกและต้นไม้ปกคลุม พวกเขาจึงใช้ AI เข้ามาช่วยปรับปรุงให้ตรงกับความเป็นจริงมากขึ้น
ผลวิจัยนี้จึงรื้อความเชื่อเก่าที่เราคิดว่าน้ำจะท่วมนิดเดียว แต่จริง ๆ แล้วน้ำจะท่วมเร็วกว่าที่เราเคยคิดมากจนอาจทำให้เมืองทั้งเมืองหายไปได้เลย ในปี ค.ศ. 2050

นอกจากกรุงเทพมหานครบทความชิ้นเดียวกันนี้ยังเปิดเผยว่าเมื่อคำนวนด้วยสูตรเดียวกันนี้ เวียดนามใต้อาจหายไปทั้งหมด เซี่ยงไฮ้และเมืองรอบ ๆ ในจีน เมืองอเล็กซานเดรียของอียิปต์ พื้นที่รอยต่ออิรัก-อิหร่าน รวมถึงมุมไบซึ่งเป็นเมืองสำคัญของอินเดียก็จะได้รับผลกระทบทั้งหมด
